Chapter 8

It took me only a few seconds of magical probing to realize Ethel Elkins was gone.

In place of the curmudgeonly opinionated chubby old lady was a stunningly beautiful, elegant woman with long, flowing platinum white hair, ruby red eyes, and alabaster skin.

“Who are you?” I asked her. Devana shook like a leaf as she piously knelt next to the woman. Intense reverence flowed from the huntress witch’s position on the floor.

Mercy looked annoyed.

“I am,” the woman smiled at me.

“She really is,” Cama chittered as she nested more comfortably in the woman’s hair.

“Are you… are you a god?”” Fiona whispered. The invader from the Witches' Council stepped back and leaned against the wall, crossing her arms.

“What is a god, really, little one?” the woman smiled widely at Fiona. “Certainly in some circles, I might be considered a goddess. Clearly to the huntress witch I am someone to be worshiped and adored,” she said as she tilted her head and flipped her silvery white hair over her shoulder. “We don’t concern ourselves with these titles and designations the way that you do. They are unimportant.”

“She’s not a god,” Mercy said flatly.

“Indeed, Mercy is correct, Fiona. Technically, she is not a god,” Aidan agreed.

The woman’s face flashed anger as she narrowed her red eyes at Aidan, ignoring Mercy. “Whatever you see in the past, reader, doesn’t necessarily inform the future. You should be more careful when speaking to those more powerful than you.”

“I’m not saying you couldn’t squash all of us like bugs,” Aidan told her casually. “I’m sure you could in the blink of an eye. In more ways than I could even fathom, even with all my knowledge. I’m just saying, though—you’re not a god.”

“And what would you know the nature of gods?” the woman thundered.

Like, literally.

When she spoke? Outside, I heard thunder rumble.

“Wow, she’s even more dramatic than the master told me,” Mercy murmured.

“I know everything, really,” Aidan told her respectfully. “I have the book of the past contained within me. Now that you and I have met, I can see even more of your history. All of it, really. So I know without a doubt that you are no god.”

Aidan shrugged.

“Then you must also know I could strike you down where you stand!” she cried as she raised her arms above her head and her hands glowed. The wind whipped around the outside of the yurt as thunder roared and flashes of lightning illuminated the room as if it were an Austin dance club.

“Yes, I do,” my friend nodded, relaxed and unaffected by the display of power. “But I also know you won’t.”

The woman’s hands remained aloft for seconds more as the rest of us stared. Lightning continued to flash, thunder continued to drum, and wind continued to howl for another three, four, and then five seconds. The anger twisted the lovely woman’s face into a mask of rage, and I was getting ready to dive under the nearest table for cover when…

Everything stopped. Like, I mean everything. All at once.
